چکیده

Two soils spiked with lead at different rates were stabilised/solidified using Portland cement and fly ash at different soil:binder ratios and tested for their setting time, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), leachability and durability. Results show that soil texture, percentage of binders and lead concentration play an important part in the treatment, significantly influencing the performance of the resulting products in terms of curing, compressive strength and durability. Pb soil concentrations higher than 15,000 mg kg were found to heavily reduce the applicability of the treatment requiring the maximum amount of binder in order to satisfy the performance criteria. The performance of sandy soils was shown to be limited by setting time and UCS features due to the retardation of the hydration reactions and also by its leaching behaviour, whereas for silt-clayey soils the critical parameter is the mechanical resistance.

A Fundamental Parametric Study on the Solidification of Malaysian Dredged Marine Soils

An enormous amount of dredged soils was generated from Malaysian rivers, lakes and seas. These dredged soils have poor geotechnical properties and are generally classified as “useless materials” [1]. However dredged soils can be recycled and reused as a potentially useful geo-material by solidification. This paper presents the study exploring the reuse potential of Malaysian dredged marine soil...

A review of the mechanical and leaching performance of stabilised/solidified contaminated soils

Stabilisation/solidification (S/S) technology, which basically involves chemical fixation and immobilisation of contaminants, mainly metals, in the matrix of cementitious binders, is widely used for treatment of contaminated soils. This paper presents a critical review of the performance of commonly used blended binder systems in S/S technology. The binders considered are Portland cement, and c...

Solidification/Stabilization of Lead Contaminated Soil Using Magnesia Phosphate cement and Ordinary Portland cement

Background and objectives: Solidification/stabilization is an effective technique for reducing the leachability of contaminants in soils. Magnesia phosphate cement and ordinary Portland cement can be used to remediate soils contaminated. In this study, the performance of the solidified/stabilized soil was compared for mixtures composed of magnesia phosphate and ordinary Portland cement. Materia...

Evaluation of cement dust effects on soil microbial biomass and chlorophyll content of Triticum aestivum L. and Hordeum vulgare L.

ABSTRACT: Overall plant growth and microbial biomass can be effected by dust accumulation. The chloroform fumigation-extraction method was used to evaluating the effect of cement dust pollution emitted from Kurdistan cement factory on soil microbial biomass carbon. Chlorophyll content (a, b and total) of plants species was measured in different distance from cement factory. Mic...

Heavy Metal Contamination of Soils around a Hospital Waste Incinerator Bottom Ash Dumps Site

Waste incineration is the main waste management strategy used in treating hospital waste in many developing countries. However, the release of dioxins, POPs, and heavy metals in fly and bottom ash poses environmental and public health concerns. To determine heavy metal (Hg, Pb, Cd, Cr, and Ag) in levels in incinerator bottom ash and soils 100 m around the incinerator bottom ash dump site, ash s...
